Despite the European Commission’s commitments, EU exports of pesticides banned within the Union continue to increase.
Based on new exclusive data, Public Eye and Unearthed reveal that the European Union exported nearly 122'000 tonnes of banned pesticides in 2024, despite the European Commission’s commitment to end this practice. The majority of these exports were destined for low- and middle-income countries, where health and environmental risks are higher.
Brazil remains the second-largest destination. "Nearly 15,000 tonnes of banned pesticides “made in Europe” were notified for export to the former Portuguese colony, primarily picoxystrobin, a Corteva fungicide used in cereal and soybean crops, banned in the EU in 2017 due to its genotoxic potential and high risk to aquatic organisms".
